Hydrogen Boosted Gas Engines

With the ever increasing cost of gasoline prices, auto makers are having to work overtime to cost effectively improve the fuel economy, while still meeting the strict emission requirements of today with gasoline engines.

One ideal and promising way to boost the fuel economy of gas engines is to add hydrogen to the fuel/air mixture in the engine. Since hydrogen isn't available at the local gas station, selling a hydrogen boosted gas engine wasn't on the list of engines - until now.

Lack of emission

A major cost and environmental advantage to hydrogen boosted gas engines are low amounts of NOx emission gas, which will completely eliminate the need for external NOx emissions control. Currently, NOx emissions control is a major cost problem for diesel engines which use expensive traps to meet the emission standards. Diesel engines particulate emissions that must be collected by a filter that should be changed periodically.

Hydrogen boosted engines on the other hand require neither NOx or particulate control and require only a low cost oxidation catalyst to control very small amounts of exhaust which is formed mostly during the engine starting up and warming up. Additional cuts in emissions control requirements stem from the engine's ability to use only the clean hydrogen enriched charge during the cold start phase when 90% of emissions are generated in the emission test.

Cost

The hydrogen boost system is effectively a bolt on technology that can be added to an existing vehicle's engine compartment. According to those developing the system, the cost of the system is less than half of the added cost for diesel.

The future

Prototype hydrogen boosted engines are now be installed in test SUV vehicles that have sufficient space for the reformer and it's related system. The start of long term road testing for performance, reliability, and durability information is planned for later on in the year before the system goes further into development.

Four cylinder gasoline engines will likely be the prime candidates for the technology as high gas prices continue to generate competition among the higher fuel economy models that seek MPG leadership.

With gas prices getting higher and higher, hydrogen boosted gas engines offer you the chance to get more miles per gallon and not have to worry about burning up all of your fuel. Instead of having to go out and buy a diesel to conserve fuel, hydrogen boosted units will help you preserve gas.

Even though they aren't available to buy right now, they will be very soon. Many manufacturers are looking into them, as they offer gasoline engines something like never before. Hydrogen fuel cells attract more attention because hydrogen is supposed to be pollution free. Hydrogen fuel cell cars, water power cars, whatever you call them it all comes down to the same thing and that’s cheap clean fuel.

Hydrogen for cars is not a new concept, in fact it has been around for a long time, but due to pressure from the big oil companies it has been suppressed and kept out of the public eye. The hydrogen for cars is later used by the fuel cell to transform its chemical energy into electric and mechanic energy to drive the car. In the past people have been reluctant to use hydrogen technology, but now because of the unstable oil and gasoline prices and the poor state of the economy it seems that everyone is looking for alternative energy and cheaper fuels, and hydrogen for cars is gaining in popularity as a way to cut the high cost of motoring.

Hydrogen Car Kits: Pre-built VS Do-It-Yourself

If you are considering water powering your car by installing one of those hydrogen generator gas saving devices, you will be facing two available options: Buying a pre-made hho gas generator system or making one yourself using inexpensive items you can buy at most home improvement centers.

The truth is, while buying a pre-made hydrogen fuel cell generator system may seem like an attractive choice at first, there is a hidden downside that you can completely avoid by using a quality do-it-yourself water hybrid conversion system.

Besides the fact that it's more expensive, the main problem is the quality and longevity of pre-made hho devices. The reason for this is that this whole water hybrid conversion craze is moderately new. It's also a highly unregulated industry created by do-it-yourselfers. When purchasing one of these pre-built hho devices, you don't really know what to expect long term.

Sure some work well for a while, but what happens in 2 months from now when parts start to come loose and corrode. If you don't build the unit yourself, you can't control the level of quality which is why most of these pre-assembled ready-to-install kits (usually slapped together in a couple of hours in someone's living room) don't last very long at all.

Think about it. In such a new industry, why would the makers of these hho gas conversion kits spend the extra money and time to make sure your unit lasts past 3 months. The reality is, it's an unregulated market and they really don't have to.

This is why I believe it is a much better option to just stick to a high quality, proven do-it-yourself water for fuel system. One that lets you choose what level of quality you put into your hho device, while saving you money on the front end and long term.

However, if you still insist on taking your chances with pre-assembled ready-to-install hydrogen fuel cell generators, make sure you're getting a quality unit by asking the following important questions first!

1: How Many Stainless Steel Plates Does The Unit Use In It's Plate Stack?
Quality hydrogen generator kits (with high output and great efficiency) use 16 plates in the plate stack which must be sanded down with 36 grit sandpaper first. Settling for anything less is like settling for saving 20% gas rather than 50%. It's your choice. (Also insure plate grade is 308, 316 or higher.)

2: Are The Electrical Connectors And Wires In The Electrolyzer Properly Insulated With Heavy Duty Shrink Tubing?
Some of these pre-made gas conversion kits only wrap the electrical collections (emerged in water) in electrical tape or liquid tape. To prevent the deterioration of these connections and have a long lasting unit both insulating methods must be used along with a final wrap with shrink tubing. Hydrogen fuel cell units that don't take this vital step tend to work fine for a while but short out after a few months.

3: Does The Unit Shut Off Automatically When You Turn The Engine Off?
This is a must-have safety requirement of any good hydrogen fuel generator. Ask the maker of the unit if it stops producing HHO gas automatically when you turn your engine off. All good hydrogen car conversion kits should include this feature and not just use a toggle switch to turn the unit on and off manually which can come with the risk of causing an explosion.

4: Has The Unit Been Properly Sealed And Will It Stay That Way?
If the vital parts of these hydrogen fuel generators are not sealed (and resealed) properly, they will leak. As a result your vehicle loses power, you waist more gas and it can eventually damage your engine. Often the creators of pre-made hho gas devices can skimp on the automotive goop "so to speak" or not take all the necessary secondary "sealing" precautions needed to insure the unit stays sealed even under extreme conditions and well into the future.

As you can see, there is a good reason why the automotive hydrogen generator market is a do-it-yourself industry at this time in history. It's because, until these types of gas conversion kits are embraced by mainstream manufacturing, YOU must control the level of quality put into one of these things yourself (in order to be safest and in order to have a long lasting unit.) If you don't, you could be throwing away your money and risking harming your vehicle, yourself and your passengers.

The good news is, you can easily built a long lasting hho unit and water power your car properly! Just make sure to follow the advice given above when considering any pre-built or diy system and you'll do ok.

What the oil companies don’t want you to know. Were you aware that bio diesel, electric and HHO technology is not as difficult or expensive as we have been led to believe? There is a myth that people aren’t going to rush out and buy eco-friendly fuel efficient cars because of the price. I know there are other reasons consumers aren’t buying the so-called cars of the future. I think a major drawback is the power we have to give up to save the planet. We love to accelerate. Of course the oil companies know all these things, and that is why most of the car companies, the American one’s in particular, still doesn’t offer a reliable, powerful, and fuel efficient line of automobiles. There is a reason why even imports, with all the talk of being so advanced in hybrid technology, don’t offer anything that gets more than forty MPG. They should be selling cars that get twice that MPG. The technology exits, and it is no where near as expensive as everyone leads us to believe. I have the proof, and I can show you how easy it is to convert your current auto or truck to be environmentally safe and unbelievably fuel efficient. I will give you the facts on three of the most well known conversions, and a source to find out more if you’re interested.
We will begin with biofuels.

There is a major difference between biofuels and biodiesel .The main difference is that biodiesel with little or no modification needed, can only be used in diesel engines. It is made from soybeans and can be used in its pure form, but it is usually mixed with standard diesel fuel. They do have a few very important aspects that are alike however. Biofuels, such as ethanol are made from corn and other crops. Like biodiesel, biofuels are not only stemming the tide of global warming but helping support American agriculture. You can’t just dump a few gallons of vegetable oil in your tank however. You will ruin your engine. The conversion is grassroots technology, and for the most part a do it yourself process. Although the government seems to be behind it in theory, I wouldn’t go changing over until you investigate it thoroughly. Electric cars. Wow, how about that Tesla Motors. If you haven’t yet seen what their coming out with next year, it is amazing. The Model S is Beautiful, 250-300 mile range, and 0-60mph in less than six seconds. I think that most of us don’t have the $50k asking price however. Most of the manufacturers of electric cars just don’t get it. They expect that to save the planet we will put up with 50 mile range before having to recharge, and a speed of 60mph. Well, there are some do it yourselfers’ that claim their conversion will give you 100 mile range, and it only cost a few hundred dollars. I think that if you are someone that does not drive on the highways often, an electric car might be perfect. In addition the government will give you a tax credit for driving a clean fuel vehicle.

Although hydrogen cells are what most experts claim to be the fuel of the future, I have found a grassroots movement that uses
water as fuel today. You will still have to take the occasional trip to the gas pump, because water is supplemental to your gas or diesel fuel, and 100% water cars are still on the drawing board. Moreover, extracting energy from water to double or triple your fuel economy is VERY EASY. This is not new technology. People have been using water to gas converters in vehicles for years. This is proven technology. Using a simple device, you can use the electricity from your battery to separate water (H2O) into a gas known as HHO. HHO is two parts’ Hydrogen and one part Oxygen. HHO is a supercharged gas that burns effectively and produces significant energy, greatly improving your fuel economy. Incredibly, the waste product is water! The green car of the future just might be sitting in your driveway. Because the hydrogen is produced On-Demand, this technology is perfectly safe for you and your passengers. Sure, you can probably get a better deal with a used car, but you've probably decided that the risks of driving a second-hand car or even third-hand are not worth saving some extra cash. You're willing to shell out the extra bucks to get a car fresh off the lot, so here's how to make sure you get what you want without getting ripped off!

Do your homework. Get the most recent annual auto issue by Consumer Reports magazine, which is usually put out in April (you can probably find an issue online - see the links below—or at your library; or simply get an online subscription to Consumer Reports to access their information easily...it's worth the price). Alternatively, use a site like SearchAutoReviews.com to browse through free reviews from multiple sources on the web. Research makes and models that fall within your price range.
Get your priorities in order. What's most important to you? Safety? Reliability? Appearance? Performance? Spaciousness? Versatility? Fuel efficiency? Compare cars in terms of how well they satisfy your needs.
Set your sights on 3 models that you'd be happy driving off the lot. Go to the manufacturer websites and configure your vehicle with the options you want. Get the MSRP for each of these cars, and print it out (along with the details of the configuration you want). Also, look to see if there are any manufacturer incentives available for the car you want, such as $1500 cash back or a $500 rebate for recent college grads and/or those in the military.

I don't mean being a jerk, but just firm and know what you want.
Don't forget the Internet department! You can often get a lower price by requesting it through the dealer's website.
Buying at the right time is important. At the end of the year the dealers just want it off their lot. Last December I called about a vehicle and didn't even have to negotiate to get it quoted at invoice.
Don't let them harass you saying things like "you don't haggle with the cashier at the supermarket for a gallon of milk do you?" Respond by saying that you don't have to worry that you are paying more for milk than the person before you did. Also, no-one has ever financed a gallon of milk, and every brand of milk is equal in quality. Don't let them tell you this deal can only be made today. Walk away. I guarantee you can come back later.
They can afford to sell at invoice because of the holdback and dealer fees; that's all the profit they deserve, but don't expect to pay invoice for a high demand- low supply car.
It's better to shop for a car during off-peak hours - weekday evening, for instance.

Warnings

Don't let a salesperson check your credit report unless you've gotten an offer that you're serious about signing. Frequent inquiries into your credit report can lower your score. Instead, get your credit report yourself (which won't affect your score) and bring it in with you to get an estimated finance rate.
Watch out for the extras many dealer's Finance and Insurance Saleperson try to sell to you. (This is the person you are often sent to after making the initial "deal" with your saleperson. They finish your transaction, and try to sell you additional services and merchandise. They are generally very agressive and persuasive.) Services like rustproofing have a value that is questionable at best, and extended warranties and the like are generally less expensive when purchased separately. Read everything that you have to sign.
If the dealer suggests inflating your earnings in order to get a better interest rate tell them no because you will be liable for fraud and the dealer won't be liable.
